Let’s be honest, the only souls-like that really matters is Bloodborne 2 in many fans minds. That has to be a certainty for the PS6 and exclusive console seller. The question though is one that’s valid, are souls-likes taking over the industry? How do people feel about games coming out where the entire game is centred on being, well tough, for the majority of people.
For me, I love a challenge in gaming but the genre is getting a bit oversaturated. Many times these are original experiences that are made for a certain audience where other people feel locked out of. I have played games that I haven’t managed to complete. I don’t think there is a gamer out there who hasn’t.
In the 00s, when I was a better gamer than I am now. You could say these experiences matched the level. As we get older though, our focus to play on normal and just have a smooth experience becomes more prominent. I think everyone has a level, and I also think without question there should be more ways to allow games to be more accessible to normal gamers after a certain period with story modes and the like.
Lies of P is a great example of a game that has heard those sorts of complaints. It doesn’t compromise on the real experience and the developer continues to sell copies to a broader spectrum. I really think the idea of more accessibility around soul-likes does need to come front and centre. The likelihood is that is exactly what will happen and everyone can play and experience games the way they feel they enjoy them.
I think it’s the right way of going about it without annoying those who do enjoy a challange. What Lies of P has done in bringing that to players is commendable.
