Bruno Fernandes has been an incredible asset for Manchester United. Over a period of time that’s been some of our worst years. He’s been a shining light in the dark and has put in some great performances. You could say that there is a level of inconsistency that has been there as well. But beyond that, he’s been a success. However, Bruno Fernandes is our biggest asset right now. My fear is this summer we hold him like a carrot on a stick waving it around and it takes up the whole of the summer before his situation is dealt with.
Where Manchester United are as a football club has never been more dire. We have an opportunity to sell our biggest asset. Which to summarize for you is getting older and the value you will get for him will diminish over the coming years based on that and future performances which are never guaranteed.
What is guaranteed is or at least should be, selling your asset now for £100 million plus so that Amorim can build a team around the very thing that’s going to make or break him next season – his system. We all know that he needs players and the club is being presented with an important opportunity to actually allow the team to be refreshed this summer. It’s an important transfer window not just for us but for Amorim.
I think if anything, Bruno Fernandes is going to realise this and how his transfer away from the club could benefit us massively in the long-term. It’s not a case of not wanting Bruno Fernandes. It’s a case of doing what is in the best interest for Manchester United right now. If there remains a point where our owners cannot see that and do not sanction the transfer with all these considerations being there. Then ultimately, it doesn’t fill me with a lot of confidence that as a club we actually know what we’re doing.
We need to get serious about the situation we’re in. That means taking steps to actually make the team as a whole potentially more asset-strong. We can talk about morale of the team with Bruno leaving. However, if you actually go and get targets that can help take the club higher up the table then it can be a catalyst to actually improving your situation overall. Nothing is ever certain in football, but we really need to be more proactive in our thinking. As much as we all love what Bruno Fernandes has given us throughout the years. I think the time has come for him to go if it means it helps us get the targets we need.
