The Witcher 3 holds the most hours I’ve ever played in a video game. Nothing has beaten that since. However, it looks like a lot of developers are now learning from Geralt’s adventures in the best of ways. When you look around the gaming industry. There are games that are coming that are really going to hit a really high level in terms of production. One of them is the new Fable, another is Exodus, and the one that has always set that bar high anyway through the generations is GTA.
Obviously, we’re getting a lot more ‘huge world’ games with the kind of depth to the worlds that we want to see and that’s increasing. I think The Witcher and GTA have really set a bar in terms of how developers want to produce these big worlds with plenty of content within them. Of course, these games have been long in the making but there is already a lot of hype around them.
Learning from the industry’s best developers is no mean feat. We’ve already heard about the ambitions that The Witcher has of bringing out a trilogy of new games. It’s getting to a point where AI will be used for the vast majority of the work assets to alleviate some of the time constraints. That much is certain, but at the same time, if it helps push more games of significance it’s going to be in a publisher’s interest.
We still need senior developers and teams leading these big games. Although we know it’s inevitable how technologies are going to be pushed. It still remains important based on The Witcher 3’s principles that we still get content in a completely organically sourced way.
Because you cannot train the craft of love that goes into game development in any other way. It can be great with assisting, but if games want to keep reaching their peak it needs to be done in a way that keeps old school gamers in mind. Just as Fable has hit a high note with its fans.
It’s because it’s a labor of love and how that’s representing the foundations of what that game was built on.
