This summer the club was tasked with getting in a striker. It set its sights on Liam Delap. That’s gone, then unrealistically and probably all but spin we were suddenly in for the best striker in terms of output Viktor Gyökeres who now is potentially going to Arsenal and has turned down a move to Manchester United.
We have one player in so far and that was a given because it was a release clause. This is our most significant and most needed area on the pitch and we’re still (at the current time) messing around and not getting things over the line. Now, there is no need to panic as there is more than enough time but any well-run football club gets their targets in before the pre-season.
We’ve been messing around penny pinching with the same rhetoric of ‘we want to get players who want to come here’ and yet, we’re spending time with strikers where the destination is Arsenal. Just what the hell are we doing as a football club? It was only last week where most Manchester United fans were saying ‘we still have the pull’ and yet, only one player so far, that was certain to come in the circumstances.
We now have two options for strikers. Both are going to cost us in either transfer or wages so we might as well go all out to get one of them in. If we don’t we’re going to be in big trouble. We all saw last season how much this position needs renewing. The transfer market opens back up on Monday, if by the end of the week there is no movement it’s going to be interesting just how much we dither or panic.
One thing that hasn’t been slow is getting the club shirts out. Sure, that’s a formality every season but honestly we just had our worst season ever in the premier league. We need to do much more and fast otherwise we’re going to be in big trouble next season.
I lost faith in this ownership a long time ago. Nothing ceases to amaze me just how bad we are at getting deals done. Still time yet, but for god sake. Back the manager!
