Who would’ve thought that fast forward from the Xbox One era that Xbox would be in the position they’re in right now. Game Pass is the cog in the wheel and an innovation that has transformed how people play games on the Xbox ecosystem. It’s changed the game in the sense that you’re able to play the games your way. It focuses on providing value and if there is one thing that Game Pass provides and has done this year – it’s that.
It’s not just that though, it’s how they’re building their platform and even bringing other store-fronts into it. We might never get PlayStation offering this level of value but I am so glad that with the resources Microsoft has they’re the ones leading the way in that – because they can. I think ultimately, if you play both Xbox and PlayStation.
You’re in a good place with the options you have especially after that showcase. It’s not even much about the exclusives anymore. Those days are long gone. It’s going to be more about what a platform can bring to you. With that, the Xbox Showcase was a real highlight for me this summer. Mostly because it’s shown how far Xbox has come.
You can look at PlayStation and while they haven’t lost ground in sales of games or hardware as they’re the leaders in that with Nintendo. It’s clear to me that all three platforms offer something that the player wants and needs. That’s a good thing for competition. I see PlayStation this generation still recovering from some of the mistakes it’s made this generation.
For the PS6, it’s going to be really intriguing how they utilise their best games and prior library of games to keep people engaged in that platform – they’re going to need to. Of course, you’re always going to have fans of one platform over the other and that’s perfectly fine. Gaming habits are subjective just as opinions are. However, if you cannot admire the choice on offer and the value on offer from Game Pass. Then I am not exactly sure what’s going to make you happy. I thought the Xbox Showcase was the best thing this summer overall.
I will say one thing, the State of Play offered a great time also. I think with what we’re seeing, the competition is going to ramp up and there is a considerable strength now within the gaming industry and it’s bringing a lot of innovative ideas. There are more gamers than ever before and all are playing their way and enjoying how they purchase or experience games.
It was never about ownership, I think people lose sight of that fact quite a lot because none of us actually own a thing especially with most gamers going fully digital. With what Xbox is doing next generation with bringing these different store-fronts to us. It’s really going to allow people to feel like they’re getting a sense of that ownership back.
Gaming is all about the experience it provides and having access to gaming in the way you want to play. That’s always going to sell a console even if you’re porting games on a rival like PlayStation.
I enjoyed my time watching and I certainly believe that the best is yet to come as we approach a new generation for both Xbox and PlayStation. Even though there were a few absentees there was more than enough games to get excited about. This generation has yet to peak in my opinion. Next year is going to be really important for a lot of reasons.
My Favourite Games From The Events
All in all, a great time
Some people are saying this was a quite ‘reserved’ showcase. Not sure I’d say that personally, I think what we got was a string of quality games from great teams across the board that’ve obviously gone all out. It’s going to be interesting how they top this next year. Whether it was Xbox or PlayStation. They provided a lot of good stuff and we all have a lot to look forward to – amongst the backlogs. Never forget about them.
