There is going to be a battle within the gaming industry on the handheld front. Xbox with its PC-hybrid features will be a combination not many can resist – it also has an advantage in the sense that those features now translate on handheld. However, PlayStation and Nintendo will be the most keenly watched brands in this space.
With Sony now getting into handhelds again and on the verge of bringing greater capabilities on that front in terms of overall power in the device. I think Nintendo really has a task on their hands to keep their power crown. Sony is making a powerful handheld device that can compete with the Nintendo Switch 2 but is very much likely to be future-proofed as well.
They will look to match Xbox’s ambitions as competition breeds innovation. Another thing Sony is good at is learning from those around them. Ultimately, this is Nintendo’s market to lose. If you were to say who has always done a powerful living room console better.
Not many would argue that Sony and Microsoft have an advantage right now – that could move to handheld as well. It’s something that Nintendo is going to have to keep tabs on especially going into the next generation of Nintendo hardware.
It’s all going to come down to software as well. As much as it’s going to come down to the price of any future iteration. The battery life in these handhelds does leave a lot to be desired right now for fans. I think if anybody can really take advantage of running games as well as having substantial IP to back it up.
While also, having the ability to get a substantial gaming session that’s beyond the two hours or so right now. Then, I believe they will have a great chance of finding their feet going into the next generation. My belief is Sony will have a great advantage in that, however, nobody can rule either Nintendo or Xbox out either.
I think for the latter brand, it’s going to be more about how serious Microsoft is and how they can define themselves in that space.
The Xbox Rog Ally X is doing very well (niche) but some gamers only really have trust in Sony and Nintendo to deliver because of the bad press the Xbox brand has had of late. If Microsoft is to have any say in this space. They’re going to have to deliver something truly special that competes and runs games the best.
Price is a major factor where I think Microsoft fails somewhat in this respect. They do have another chance with their own in-house Xbox handheld though. Nintendo has shown it will be a fan favourite and be competitive in this space. I truly believe that Sony will do so as well.
We can always factor in how used to a brand we all are. Everyone has their favourite. However, if power can meet the levels of battery optimization for fans to play even longer. That’s where I think the next handhelds have the edge and where that will gain the most traction for each brand.
They really need to match the needs of the consumer in what is going to be a really important market going into the next generation. Nobody can really dismiss that portability is going to be a big thing. Especially as we move into a newer generation of players, but even older fans are really starting to get to grips with how playing portable can have its own benefits when they do not have the living room space. It’s going to be about who can match those ambitions for the player the best and that will draw favor in how far they go with bringing the best experience overall to the fans.
