Will Sony Join The Party?

There is a resurgence happening my friends. Multi-player games are on the up in quality. With the success of Battlefield 6 and Arc Raiders right up there. Listening to the fans and creating a quality product right out the gate. It certainly helps to accelerate that success. I think we’re going to see a roadmap of content that will be there for the long term with these games.

I haven’t dabbled in multi-player all that often. What can be said though is I haven’t had this much fun playing multi-player games since the 360. Speaking of the Xbox 360, and the success of multi-player and concurrent players recently. I think next generation with Microsoft dropping the Xbox online fee completely.

We could see that resurgence really excel and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if we get more online experiences with unique games that can push the momentum over there also. I think it’s going to be important for Microsoft to play to its PC strengths but also keep in mind the console crowd and build on any momentum they have there.

How much control are we really going to have over who we play on Xbox? I personally feel like we need to have as much control over as possible when it comes to who we face online. Cross-play is great, but for some having that console experience remain intact. You’re not going to get that on Steam Machine. I really feel like the next Xbox is going to be a multi-purposed device with a lot of customisation. I mean, Windows gives you that anyway.

With the recent news that Sony might quietly remove access for some of their PC released games. Mainly because of the amount of bang for your buck you’re going to get from the Steam Machine and the next Xbox. Whatever they choose to do really is going to define the narrative around them.

PlayStation Studios will want as many people playing their games. But also, it’s Sony who has the final say. But bringing it back on topic, with the success of Helldivers. Is that the kind of success they want to give up when it’s doing so well for them? That sort of answers half the question.

I feel Sony believes there are games they can put on other consoles and maybe others they keep under an exclusive release window. After all, what momentum does Sony have if they allow others instant access?

The way things are going it’s going to be a really interesting upcoming generation for Sony. I feel as though the eyes really are firmly on them because they have to keep a generational momentum going on a closed-ecosystem. Everyone else in the industry is being a lot more progressive.

Of course, they have to be. Because Sony has obliterated its competition for many decades. I’ve said it before but people love the brand. It’s had the most success it’s ever had which means it gives Sony a lot more control and isn’t forced to necessarily share in the way the others are.

I am certain, they will have their own way of seeing things, their own way of seeing opportunities where they are and will likely do the best for them. However, at the same time I have always thought, actually, they will have to join the rest of the party eventually in the way they move forward. But doing so, in a very Sony way.

What does that mean? More Helldivers and games of it’s ilk that make sense to be moved onto other platforms.

It wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if Sony has decided to become more restricted in the way it releases first-party IP exclusives moving forward. However, the caveat to that is, if the excessive high costs around first-party games at Sony remain. They either have to adapt, or they have to release to more players. It’s going to be really interesting just what route they take us and if any of the recent hearsay on this is true recently.
