Sony’s ‘Need’ To Express Themselves

intergalatic

When Sony first started making mo-capped video game movies. They finally found their rhythm and offered some of the best exclusives that you could get. It’s something that has in fact sold many a PlayStation. It’s what resonates with fans and crucially it’s what fans want to see more of.

When I saw Wolverine I knew for a fact that they had nailed it. The gore, the combat, and even the actual character model is all on point. It’s a throwback to what the X-men meant to all of us growing up back in the 90s in terms of the animated series. I see this as a very different kind of exclusive and one that is going to be a major success for Sony – as Spiderman itself was also.

There has been a lot of talk around how creators tell their stories particularly with The Last of Us. I’ve always been of the opinion as a creator that if it’s your story and you want it told that way. Ultimately, that’s your every right. The creative direction in games and movies has taken some backlash.

However, when you create something that is true to the message you want to send out. As a creator, that’s always going to take precedence over what people think. If we’re restrained from creating in the way we create then some of the best stories may never be told.

Originality is always the key and I think PlayStation is on a slippery slope with some fans that are unable to digest some of the content they put out. Whether it be disagreements with the narrative, characters or too many sequels. Something will have to give at some point and that’s why Wolverine and the success that Sony has had in the Marvel-verse is quite profound.

In the sense that, they can tell a story and as long as they stay true to the vision of that character you’re not going to run into too many problems. But again, no matter what exclusive Sony makes and who is creating that game. All stories should be allowed to be told in their original form.

Censorship of artistry in any form is something that I do not agree with unless absolutely necessary. It’s going to be interesting how Sony balances this out going forward as they choose to create new stories that hopefully people will get on board with. That’s why I hope Naughty Dog are ready for what’s going to come with their next game.

When you’re telling stories, there is a segment of the fanbase that has disliked previous directions of games. It really presents itself in open view because everyone is wondering just what the next big upset is going to be. Despite games being art and ultimately, having every right to be expressed no matter the creator.

It’s one of the things I dislike about the gaming industry sometimes. We just need to let the creatives express themselves. People moan about there being too many sequels but then when you get something original you’re still moaning or there is something down the line wrong with that also.

It’s just insanity of epic proportions. Next generation Sony will likely offer up very different ways in which they tell a story. But it’s up to us to give them every opportunity to tell that story if we want to see original things keep happening.
